August 26th is Women’s Equality Day! Now, just because today isn’t a mainstream or widely-known holiday, doesn’t mean it should pass by unrecognized or un-celebrated. The holiday was created to remember when women gained the right to vote on August 26, 1920. So, what better way to celebrate the holiday than by talking about voting!
Philadelphia-based business, Intuitive Company, is on a mission to simplify and streamline the voting process. It’s 2016, why are we still waiting in line to vote and using paper ballots? This system is pretty outdated and may be why only 54.2% of eligible Americans vote. Americans have been casting millions of votes for popular TV shows from personal cellphones for years, why can’t it be this simple for elections? Intuitive Company thinks it can, and is creating an app to beat all voting apps. This app, as planned, will let you do everything in one place: register to vote, learn about the candidates, fill out a practice ballot and, eventually, actually vote!
For now, the app designers are focusing on simply making the current voting system easier. Their app will allow users to research candidates, find the nearest polling station, find important dates and times, and fill out practice ballots. These simple features are intended to help Americans become informed, write their ballot decisions down to take with them to the traditional polls, and quickly get in and out of the polling place to reduce wait times for all voters.
Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We won’t be able to vote from our cellphones anytime soon, that is, until legislation is changed. That is likely to take years, so we are going to be using the current system for awhile. But this new app is a step toward advancement in the political voting procedures. If you want to learn about voting in your state or want to register to vote, here is a very helpful YouTube video that provides links to every state and describes how voting and registration work in each one.
Happy Women’s Equality Day! Celebrate by registering to vote or filling out a practice ballot, because voting is a beautiful thing!
