Techies can’t think about March without thinking about SXSW (South by Southwest), the mega media and interactive festival held in Austin each year.
So, as we close out the month, I bring you the app darling of SXSW, Meerkat.
Meerkat is a live-streaming app that allows users to easily stream real-time video through their Twitter accounts. The app was launched less than a month ago, and has hit it big at SXSW.
Honestly, it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen this kind of breakout hit from an app during SXSW. Twitter blew up there in 2007 and Foursquare did the same in 2009. But since since then, it has been a little quieter.
That is, until Meerkat. SXSW-ers used the app to stream concerts, panels and even their walk home at night. Social media world seems to LOVE it and some are claiming that Meerkat is going to do to live news TV what Twitter did to journalism. What’s that mean? Make it short, even more real-time, and generated by the public.
It’s a pretty bold claim, don’t you think!? Have you tried the app Meerkat? Do you think this will be as big as Foursquare and Twitter, or just another fad?
